1.1 Using the ifconfig and ping Commands

In this exercise, you learn that the ifconfig command is an administrative command that can be used only by the privileged root user. You also learn how to use the ping command.

Log on to a Solaris machine using your own username and try to use the ifconfig plumb hme0:3 command. You will see an ifconfig: plumb: SIOCLIFADDIF: hme0:3: permission denied error message showing that you are not allowed to use this command.

Now su to root and try to use the command again. This time you are able to use this command.
