Package Formats

Packages can be provided in the following configurations.

  • In a CD-ROM file system.

  • On raw media such as a tape.

  • In a raw package file, which is written into a file system.

Most packages come as a directory tree, where the top-level directory is the name of the package. One or more packages can be bundled inside a package file that is created with the pkgtrans command. See “Translating Package Formats” for more information about the pkgtrans command.
