Preparing for Setup and Configuration

Before configuring your NIS+ namespace, you must complete the following tasks.

  • The nisserver and nisclient commands automatically copy the /etc/nsswitch.nisplus file to /etc/nsswitch.conf. If you do not use the nisserver or nisclient commands, you must install a properly configured nsswitch.conf file on each system that uses NIS+

  • Plan your namespace, determining the following factors.

    • Decide on your NIS+ domain name. Your NIS+ domain name may be the same as your DNS domain name, although it does not need to be. If you plan to create a hierarchy of NIS+ domains that map to your existing DNS domains, using existing DNS domain names is easier.
