12. Solaris Zones

This chapter describes basic Solaris Zones concepts and provides common procedures for using this feature.

12.1 Overview

The Solaris 10 Operating System (Solaris 10 OS) introduced an operating system-level virtualization feature called Solaris Zones, also known as Solaris Containers. Resource management features available in the operating system are used with zones to form containers, referred to simply as zones. Zones impose little or no overhead. A non-global zone is a virtualized operating system environment created within a single instance of the Solaris Operating System, known as the global zone. Thus, the global zone is the Solaris 10 OS.
