IPSEC IS A SECURITY ARCHITECTURE FOR the Internet Protocol. IPsec is available for both IP version 4 and version 6. It works at the IP level (the Network layer of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Reference Model). IPsec, unlike other network security solutions, is transparent to upper-level protocols and applications. Applications generally are unaware of whether they run over regular IP or IPsec, but in the case of IPsec, they enjoy authentication, encryption, integrity, and replay protection.
