Network Troubleshooting

Technologies such as Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and Remote Monitoring (RMON) help you manage large and complex networks. However, when something goes wrong or is beyond the scope of these technologies, the only way to have an in-depth look at the network is to use some sort of network analyzer. There are two kinds of network analyzers and packet gatherers: those implemented on general-purpose systems, such as Solaris, and specialized ones, such as those from Fluke. This section shows you how to use snoop and tcpdump on Solaris to do basic network troubleshooting on Ethernet networks.
