top is almost a real-time tool for system monitoring. It shows information about the processes, their states, used memory and CPU cycles, system load, and other useful information. top continuously updates all this information to be as current as possible. top’s disadvantage is that it is very sensitive to operating systems’ internal data structures and must be recompiled every time the OS is upgraded. Solaris 8 comes with a utility called pstat that is like top. For more information on pstat, see pstat(1M) .
