xinetd is a replacement for the standard inetd (Internet superdaemon). It provides access control, logging, and other useful features over the inetd that ships with the system. One of the differences between xinetd and inetd is the configuration file’s format. inetd.conf cannot be used with xinetd and must be rewritten for xinetd.
