Summary

This chapter introduced the auditing and accounting subsystems of the Solaris 8 operating environment, as well as how to configure and use them. Auditing is a powerful security tool, but it is not a Plug and Play technology—it requires skill, knowledge, and resources to use. When configured or used improperly, auditing can introduce many serious problems of its own (such as filling up disk space and severely degrading performance), so it must be used with due care at all times. Accounting, inferior to auditing in terms of contributing to system security, may nevertheless be useful in certain environments.
