AUTHENTICATION AND AUTHORIZATION ARE AT THE HEART of security. It may be said that in most circumstances,“security” means “authentication and authorization”— that is, being able to tell the difference between a friend and an outsider and appropriately delegating rights and privileges. This chapter looks at the many parts of the Solaris 8 operating environment related to authentication and authorization—the traditional UNIX /etc/passwd and login, role-based access control (RBAC) (new in Solaris 8), smart card interface features, and others.
