SOHO networks fulfill a multiplicity of applications, from simple peer-to-peer resource sharing to sophisticated client server configurations supporting mission-critical applications. The simplest of SOHO LANs is a home-office or home-entertainment resource-sharing network permitting PC hosts to share disk drive storage, printers, and high-speed Internet access. Such a network costs around $250 for Network Interface Cards (NICs), an Ethernet cable modem/DSL router/switch, and CAT-5 unshielded twisted pair wiring. A single Wireless Access Point, four-port switch and DSL/cable modem router combination runs $200 and wireless LAN cards run $80 each.
