802.1 p/Q— 802.1p assigns priority levels to frames at the Media Access Control (MAC) layer (Layer 2) of the OSI model. The 802.1p standard also filters multicast traffic to ensure it does not proliferate over switched networks. The 802.1p standard works in tandem with 802.1Q VLAN tagging. 802.1Q defines a 32-bit tag header inserted after a frame's normal destination and source address header. Switches, routers, servers, and desktop systems can set 802.1 p/Q priority bits. In VoIP networking the 802.1 p/Q priority mechanism is a means for fulfilling VoIP QoS.
