Summary
In this chapter we first examined wireless LAN technologies and standards. These standards were the IEEE 802.11 standards. The most widely implemented IEEE 802.11 standard is the IEEE 802.11b specification using the 2.4 GHz ISM band to operate at speeds of 11 Mbps. The IEEE 802.11a specification uses a higher frequency band and operates at speeds up to 54 Mbps. Several manufacturers are delivering products conforming to the IEEE 802.11a specification. The newest IEEE specification is the IEEE 802.11g specification that uses a 2.4 GHz ISM band but operates at higher speeds than the IEEE 802.11b specification.
