Appendix D: Basic Timing Concepts

This appendix provides added background material on timing concepts. Time and performance are complex subjects in embedded and mobile systems. This appendix is not complete so for those wishing to further expand their understanding of time, you must use the reference material cited in this book.

Mobile and embedded real-time performance computing is about satisfying time constraints acceptably well. Here, acceptable includes all of the following timing factors:

  • Predictable
  • Meets application and situation-specific data criteria
  • Provides functionality given the system–software context circumstances
