Defects are the central focus point of the endgame. They are detected during development, review, and product testing. To the development and testing teams, they represent work. To managers, they represent scheduling challenges. In this chapter, I explore some background material on defects.

It’s probably best to get some definitions clear, right from the start, elaborating on the synonyms I introduced in Chapter 1:

A defect is any unique entry into a defect-tracking system (DTS) that, if selected to be acted upon, will cause work to be done on a software development project by members of the team (or third-party suppliers) and will have a relationship to the project schedule. ...
