15.1 Introduction

Reconfigurable networks and systems require many new support mechanisms to allow dynamic air interface operation to be a reality [137]. Amongst IST Framework V projects sponsored by the European Commission, the Configurable Radio with Advanced Software Technologies (CAST) project [1, 2], the Transparently Reconfigurable Ubiquitous Terminal (TRUST) project [3, 4], and others consider many such mechanisms. This chapter discusses results from both of these projects from the separate contexts of software, hardware and the boundary between the two. Traditionally, a mixed hardware/software system design requires consideration of both aspects separately. This separation is an essential requirement of Software Defined Radio (SDR) in order to maintain hardware independence and portability.

The following text forms only a summary of the concepts provided by both the CAST and TRUST projects. The reader is invited to study the detail of each project by referring to the public deliverables, which can be found on the project websites [2, 3], respectively.

The intention in this chapter is mainly to study the software architecture of the TRUST project and hardware concepts of the CAST project, and explore the link between the two projects in the context of reconfigurability.
