Summary

In this chapter, we delved into the building blocks of OpenFlow-based networking. We have learned about lightweight networking technologies such as network namespaces, and how they inter-connect via Open vSwitch as reference OpenFlow switch. We have seen how underlying virtual switch infrastructure is common for full-fledged VM networks. We have also seen how Open vSwitch interfaces with SDN controllers. We covered the overall architecture of OpenStack Neutron. Finally, we covered the high-level interaction between OpenStack and OVS.

This knowledge will help us understand the functioning of SDN controllers, which are covered in the subsequent chapters as we dive into the internals of Neutron, OpenStack network-as-a-service component.
