Summary

This chapter highlighted the architecture and components of traditional networks. With the increasing adoption of scalable and dynamic applications, the control plane, and management plane design of traditional networks faced challenges. SDN is a new approach where most of the control plane software is centralized into an SDN controller. This also helps provide better management which was already centralized. Finally, we looked at how the benefits of SDN can be easily realized in OpenStack-based cloud deployment. In the next two chapters, we will look into the control plane and the data plane aspects of SDN with specific focus on Open vSwitch-based networking.
