9.2. Internal Control

When a friend comes up with bright ideas, it's human nature to try to talk them out of it, because (psychologists say) we are trying to help them avoid being discouraged. We are helping them avoid discouragement by discouraging them verbally. Makes no sense, but most of us engage in this behavior unconsciously. It's natural. In order to change our behavior, we first observe "how things happen."

Similarly, taking advice is not natural. It just seems obvious that any mature adult knows how to take advice. But we don't. Not naturally. Normally, we all think that we know what we are doing.
