In one of my favorite books of all time, The War of Art (Black Irish Books, 2002), Steven Pressfield expounds upon the difference between being a professional and being an amateur:

Turning pro is a mindset. If we are struggling with fear, self-sabotage, procrastination, self-doubt, etc., the problem is, we’re thinking like amateurs. Amateurs don’t show up. Amateurs crap out.
