FOREWORD

As an organization committed to the promotion of research in various fields of social sciences, it is the task of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) to continually monitor trends of research and identify fresh set of priorities in tune with the changing times and emerging needs of the profession. The idea of carrying out a survey of research done in various fields until the time of the founding of the ICSSR was mooted by its first Chairman, Professor D.R. Gadgil, in 1969.
