AWStats

AWStats, shown in Figure 22-10, is a little technical to use and may be more appropriate for use by the person who actually mans your website and server. AWStats is a log analyzer that measures use of your website, streaming data, and ftp and mail server (see Figure 22-11). Some web hosts include this tool in your hosting package, but if yours doesn’t, you can still install it and use it.

Figure 22-10: AWStats gives you a more technical tool.

AWStats works via CGI or from the command line and captures all information from your use logs. It then gives this information to you in graphic-based web pages. Even if your web host includes AWStats in your hosting package, you will still need to do some configuring of this tool at the command line level to get the most out of it.

This tool tells you things that Google Analytics doesn’t track, such as HTTPS error log data, worm attacks, robot information, rush hour data, and more. It’s meant to give you metrics on the foundation of your website. AWStats helps you troubleshoot if your site is slow or if you need to be able to scale up your bandwidth for higher traffic times or similar issues.
