Tracking Daily Metrics

“Data analysis is not easy. It takes years to get good at it, and once you get good at it, you realize how much more there is to learn. That is part of the joy. You are always learning. You are always growing.”

—Avinash Kaushik, Digital Marketing Evangelist, Google

These words are words to live by. This book sets you on your way, but then it’s up to you to keep learning and modifying what works and what doesn’t. In the case of metrics, the art is in the tweaking and testing.

Metrics that are not important to look at daily include

check.png The number of people who connect with you or your brand on various social media services

check.png How many people visited your blog in the last few hours

check.png How many people unfollowed you on Twitter

check.png The page rank of your site

You can probably tell where I’m going with this one. While it’s good to know the stats by day, week, month, and year for all those metrics so that you can do comparisons and grow, it’s not healthy for you or for your bottom line to actually look at those stats every single day.
