Imagine telling the great nineteenth-century department store magnate John Wanamaker that in addition to running a successful business, negotiating the needs of thousands of employees, and still turning a profit, he should create and participate in communities that are aligned to the interests of his business. And imagine telling him that if he did so, his stores would benefit because stockholders, the public, and employees would all hold the business in greater esteem and have a stronger desire to shop at Wanamaker’s.
