The Health Scenario

The provision of health services constitutes an important element of the Directive Principles of State Policy. To fulfil this mandate, a number of institutions have been created. At the national level, the official organs of the health system consist of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) and the Central Council of Health and Family Welfare. The Centre is mainly responsible for policy making, planning, guiding, assisting, evaluating and co-ordinating the work of the State Health Ministries, so that health services cover the entire country.
