Chapter 2. VERTICAL SERVICE DISCOVERY AND ANALYSIS: Pursuing Inward and Downward Road Map Patterns

It is time to start crafting a plan, a strategy that consists of a systematic service analysis and discovery process that focuses on a service's internal affairs, its internal structure, and type of offerings. The mission is to understand how business and technical imperatives drive an individual service's functionality and its capabilities. Thus it is important to study business requirements and understand technical specifications. These rudimentary analyses typically yield new services and contribute to existing service implementations.

To achieve these goals, adopt the vertical method that advocates utilizing the Inward (25) and Downward (32) discovery and analysis patterns. The Inward direction is driven by business, technical, and architectural requirements that ultimately conclude with the formation of services and the constitution of their capabilities. Thus the Inward method advocates studying business artifacts, such as business process modeling diagrams, market segmentation analysis documents, and product requirements. On the technological level, architecture and design blueprints and technical specifications offer technological solutions that a service is devised to provide.
