About the Author

Daniel Eran Dilger started in computing with an Apple II+ and spent the 1980s banging away on 8-bit systems: the Atari ST, an Apple IIGS, and a series of Macs, starting with the 512Ke. By 1989, he was engrossed in the NeXT Bible while tapping into FidoNet and finding ways to access the Internet from the backwoods of Montana. He started writing about technology in high school and began self-publishing a monthly newsletter mailed to an international audience of Apple IIGS users.

Since moving to San Francisco, he has kept a close watch on Apple, as the company teetered precariously close to failure in the mid-1990s before acquiring NeXT and embarking on the monumental task of reinventing itself as well as rethinking the desktop operating system with what resulted in Mac OS X. He served as the network administrator and IT director for moderately large operations at San Francisco General Hospital and then rode out the dotcom era by managing IT operations for a rapidly growing South of Market startup. Over the last decade, he's supported a variety of large and small clients as a technology consultant and has written extensively on the history and future of the technology landscape at roughlydrafted.com while serving as a contributing editor to a variety of technology-related websites.

Despite a variety of emergency room visits, a few broken bones, and a couple smashed laptops, he continues to enjoy riding motorcycles around San Francisco and has a passion for traveling. ...
