The prime contractor route

In projects aimed at transformation of an entire company, the proliferation of interconnections in a supply chain involving multiple suppliers can become more than a management overhead. In the worst cases, turf wars and disconnects between suppliers have actually caused transformation projects to collapse by undermining morale and destroying the crucial relationships between the suppliers, and then between each of the suppliers and the customer.

One way that a company looking to initiate a transformation project can mitigate these risks – or at least shift them down the chain – is by engaging a ‘prime contractor’ responsible for both delivering the project and managing the third-party relationships needed to do so. ...
