39 Your Eyes

Because we get so much information about others from looking into their eyes, let the camera (your audience) clearly see your eyes. Open them wide. This means no sunglasses—unless you are a rock star and dark glasses are part of your branding. It also means no hat and no long bangs.

Pretend that the camera lens is the other person’s eyes, and concentrate on looking through the camera. You will create more of a “looked at” feeling for people at the nonlocal site. This is particularly true when you are working at your computer. It is tempting to look at the monitor, since it is typically only about eighteen inches away, rather than at the camera.
