35 If You Are Sick

If you are sick on the day of a videoconference—even with just a common cold—here are a few “don’ts” to follow.

  • If at all possible, do not participate in a videoconference when you are sick. However sick you actually look, you will only appear worse on camera.
  • Avoid blowing your nose during a videoconference. Even if you are not speaking, today’s sensitive omnidirectional microphones will pick up what most of us consider a socially unacceptable sound from anywhere in the room.
  • If you have a cough, consider not talking during the meeting. A cough also gets amplified for everyone to hear. If you absolutely must cough, turn your head away from the microphone ...
