Acknowledgments

A premiere data guru in our lifetime is Daniel S. Appleton, and his personal training and coaching provide a foundation from which to advance the focus on data and making it smart. The idea to write this book came from a government client, Donald Hall, former Chief at the Defense Logistics Agency, who consistently pushed for ways to leap beyond legacy systems and culture that prevent organizations from performing optimally. Wilbert Bailey, now at the Department of Treasury, supervised some important work. Broad support for improving performance from application of information technology is the Association for Enterprise Information and its president, David Chesebrough.

We would also like to acknowledge Parag C. Pendharkar Ph.D. for contributing quantitative insights into the cases and David J. Paper, Ph.D. for his qualitative inputs. These two mentors have provided valuable guidance and a deep impact upon our understanding of basic and applied research, in both decision sciences and information systems theory.
