Growing New Leaders

One of the smartest decisions ever made in North Carolina was the creation of the Research Triangle Institute and Park in 1959. It was made by a visionary group, including the governor, key business leaders, and the presidents and faculty of three universities: Duke University, North Carolina State University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The lessons from the creation of the Research Triangle Park certainly speak volumes about tenacity and vision, but they also speak about the kinds of imaginative leaders who could create something as big and bold as a research park in a state dominated at the time by low-wage manufacturing and agriculture.
