Chapter 8. GSM and Smart Cards

Introduction

A subscriber identification module is a smart card that is used in a communication device. It is usually known by its acronym, SIM. There were approximately 600 million SIMs in GSM and 3G mobile phones and 70 million SIMs in DTH TV set-top boxes as of the end of 2001. SIM smart cards are being added to TDMA and CDMA mobile phones and to PDAs such as the Palm Pilot™ and the Handspring Visor™; their use as general-purpose network identity tokens is being actively explored. SIMs are by far the leading application of smart cards and the big-ticket items from most smart card manufacturers.
