Flip the Classroom

You’re probably doing blended learning with your classes — using technology in your classroom to enhance your learning goals. Well, here’s an idea that’s being tested within education academic circles: flipping the classroom.

For example, an instructor videotapes her instruction, such as a lecture, which the students then watch at home, and the homework is done in the classroom instead. This gives the teacher more time to interact with the students and provide one-on-one help while they do their homework. The theory is that making use of the classroom for key learning activities and help sessions may turn out to be a more productive use of face-to-face time. The SMART Board interactive whiteboard has all the tools you need to be able to record your instruction.

Although this type of learning is still experimental, I bet we’ll be seeing data in the next year or two reporting on how effective this method is. Try it, experiment, and see how your students respond!
