Chapter Five

Machine Selection

Matching the Machine to the Site and Power Needs

Abstract

Selecting a wind machine to perform the work needed to meet requirements is an iterative process that may take several attempts before a final machine is chosen. There are many things to consider, such as size, aesthetics, reliability, local dealer support, maintenance, and, finally, cost. It is essential to have sufficient wind to power the unit because many good machines have not been successful simply because they were not placed in a sufficiently windy location. A procedure is presented to match the energy consumed to the potential wind energy produced. Instructions for using a wind turbine certification report are also included.
