Chapter Four

Towers and Foundations

Support Structures That Make the Project Successful

Abstract

Towers are a critical component in a small wind system because the turbine must be placed where it can harvest the available wind resource. They must be strong enough to support the turbine and transfer its loads to the ground. Modern towers must meet the International Building Code, Uniform Building Code, or a local equivalent. Guyed towers offer a lower-cost option for many small wind turbines, but require a larger land area with restricted land use near the turbine. Freestanding towers require the smallest land area, but usually cost more and require a larger foundation. Roof-mounted towers are not recommended.
