Summary

This chapter reviewed strategic planning and goal setting and discussed three techniques that can be used for this purpose: SWOT, appreciative inquiry, and scenario planning. Having goals is at the heart of group work. Much of what we do as facilitators centers on helping groups accomplish their tasks and get along with each other in a cooperative and productive manner while they are going about this work. Strategic planning or some type of focused examination of past accomplishment and future needs or desires is a process that works well with the facilitator’s neutral role. Since a facilitator usually is not involved in the content of the group’s work product, this neutrality allows for a focus on the process itself.
