Force-Field Analysis

Name and Description

Kurt Lewin developed force-field analysis in 1951 as a technique for assessing the perceived disparity between the current state and a desired or ideal state. Two sets of counterbalancing forces maintain the disparity.

This technique originated from a physics law which states that there is always as much reaction as action. Thus, all problems have positive factors as well as negative factors and these two factors work together. According to the law, driving/impelling forces and restraining/constraining forces compete. Discussions center on ways to maximize the positives and minimize the negatives.
