Strategies to Stimulate Creativity
Free Association. This first strategy historically is associated with Freud and the process of psychoanalysis. As applied to creative problem solving, free association is a method of stimulating the imagination to accomplish some specific purpose such as producing new combinations, intangible ideas, or names. The process begins with jotting down a symbol—a word, sketch, number, or picture—related to the problem or issue of interest. Add another symbol suggested by the first one and repeat ad lib until ideas emerge (Souder & Ziegler, 1988). Since a sketch or picture can be used instead of words, this technique works well when members are not all fluent in one language.
