Recently I was on a flight, and the passenger next to me started a conversation with the usual, “What do you do?” I told him that I write books on digital photography, to which he immediately said, “I have a digital camera, and I’ve taken at least 3,000 pictures with it, but only three or four are any good.” His comment took me by surprise, as the quality and ease of use of digital cameras and especially digital SLRs have skyrocketed in recent years. But upon further consideration, I realized that this man was letting the camera make critical decisions, and, more important, he wasn’t aware that “cameras don’t take pictures… people do.”
