Take Chances! Let It Ride...

All you’re going to screw up is a picture.

I often use Aperture Priority, and at a fast-moving event, that can be a touch dangerous. Things are moving too quickly to make EV adjustments, so you have to go with the flow and trust the camera’s judgment. Sometimes, it’ll screw up. Sometimes, you’ll lose a frame, or even a bunch.

But getting out on the auto exposure tightrope can have rewards, too. The metadata on the two images on page 346 tell me they were shot precisely one second apart. I have dialed in a –1 global EV adjustment at the camera, and the flashes are running at –3 EV (the on-camera master) and +1.3 EV (the softbox).

In that split second, the camera shutter speed slid from 1/10th to 1/6th of a second. ...
