Sticking to the Plan

According to Herodotus, the ancient Greek historian, more than twenty-five hundred years ago, during a period of famine, the king of Lydia came up with a plan to help ease his people’s suffering. He began by inventing a game using dice made out of sheep’s knuckles. (The dice were the first game pieces ever designed, at least according to Herodotus.)

When introducing the game to his kingdom, the king also presented his plan: each of his subjects would play games one day and eat the following day, and continue to alternate between playing games and eating, day after day, until the famine ended. The king’s plan was based on ...
