When I was contemplating whether to go to graduate school, I thought of the academic profession as one filled with solitude. I pictured studious professors, scratching their heads in search of good ideas and putting words on paper during long hours of isolation. As it turns out, the images in my mind were quite different from reality. Most of the research discussed in Sidetracked is the result of joint projects I embarked on over the last ten years with wonderful colleagues who are also close friends.
