Introduction to the Second Edition

When I finished my undergraduate degree at the University of Iowa in 1969 I had several watercolor renderings on 16 × 20 inch cold-press illustration board, a handful of very rough draftings, perhaps a dozen 5 × 7 inch photos of the three designs that I had done in the old Armory at Iowa, and a handful of art projects of varying sizes and shapes. My plan was to apply for grad school or a job somewhere in theater. My wife took a job teaching eighth- and ninth-grade English in a small town in Wisconsin, and I started sending letters of inquiry to a number of schools, theaters, and individuals.
