Everybody needs a little help in this world. I hope this book is helpful to you. I have been very fortunate to have had lots of help from some very generous people, both in my filmmaking career and in writing this book.

I first learned the rudiments of filmmaking from Skip Landen, who ran the University film-making unit when I was a student at Cornell. Skip was a professional filmmaker who later became the head of Ithaca College's highly regarded film program. He was endlessly generous of his time and knowledge to all his students, many of whom went on to great success in Hollywood. I feel very lucky to have been one of the first of his many mentorees. I am sure there is a very special place in filmmaker heaven for Skip.
