Chapter 17

Presentation

Presentation can make a big difference to the impression that users get about a shell script, and can also make it significantly easier to use. Not all shell scripts are temporary hacks to achieve a one-off task; some scripts remain in use for years, and will be used by a wide variety of people in that time. It is good, then, that scripts are not limited to printing out sequential lines of white text on a black background. This chapter shows some of the things that shell scripts are capable of, without any elaborate tricks or dependencies on other subsystems.
