Developing and Deploying PerformancePoint Scorecards

This lesson discusses the different components of scorecards, and how to build them up into a cohesive whole. By the end of this lesson you will be able to create an interactive visualization to compare values against target values or the previous year, with drill-down capability.

TERMINOLOGY

There is often confusion about the different terms used in Business Intelligence, but they are relatively simple, each item building upon the previous. In PerformancePoint terms, each of these terms also has specific functionality.

  • Metric — Often called a measure. This is simply a value such as Sales Amount.
  • Actual — A type of metric, the actual is a value achieved
  • Target — Another type of metric, a target is an intended value. In PerformancePoint, targets also have specific indicators set.
  • KPI. Key Performance Indicator — A KPI is an actual, measured against a target, typically with a graphical indicator. In PerformancePoint a single KPI can have multiple actuals and targets.
  • KPA. Key Performance Area — In business terms, a Key Performance Area is an area of concern in the business, made of similar KPIs. In PerformancePoint, these terms have been replaced with “Leaf” KPIs and “Non-Leaf” KPIs — Leaf and Non-leaf KPIs are created in the same way, and are simply used differently in a scorecard.
