Recording Studio Operations

As the old saying goes, the job’s not over ’til the paperwork’s done. In recording studios, the job doesn’t even start until the paperwork arrives.

The first thing an assistant must do before setting up for a session is obtain the work order. This work order contains pertinent information, including the names of the client, producer, and artist; the time the session begins and ends; and spaces for purchase order numbers and job numbers (to make life easier for administrators). Another extremely useful piece of information contained on the work order is the time the next session begins, which is very helpful if the client wants to run longer than originally planned—a regular occurrence in studios (see Figure 11.7
