6.1 Introduction

In recent years, the number of natural disasters and major incidents at mass events has increased. Examples are the big tsunami in Japan in March 2011 and the Love Parade tragedy in Duisburg (Germany) in 2010. Such catastrophes usually engender a large number of casualties that have to be supplied medically as proficiently and quickly as possible.
