Urban Service Systems in Unsettled Times

Introduction

In the previous chapter, we discussed the notion of cities as service systems. Within this context, we recognized the multiplicity of actors involved in these systems: people, organizations, shared information, and technology, and acknowledged the need for a coordinated and systematic approach to the management of issues which give rise to unsettled times in these environments.

In this chapter, we introduce three case studies, each of which illustrate different types of unsettled times. It is the intention of this chapter to simply describe these case studies which are subsequently analyzed in Chapter 6.
